The Organ Donation and Bone Marrow Symposium was organized by Istanbul Medeniyet University's White Coats Student Community on November 17, 2022, at 15:00 in the Ziraat Bank Library Hasan Polatkan Conference Hall. The symposium garnered the interest of approximately 40 participants, including students from the Faculty of Medicine and faculty members.
The symposium was organized with the contributions of various non-governmental organizations and esteemed professors. The opening speech of the event was delivered by Prof. Dr. Sadrettin PENÇE, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Istanbul Medeniyet University. Additionally, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erman Öztürk, a faculty member of the Department of Hematology in the Department of Internal Medicine and the Vice Dean of our faculty, provided information to the participants about the bone marrow transplant donation process.
During the event, Op. Dr. Gültekin Hoş, the Responsible Physician of the North Marmara Organ and Tissue Transplantation Regional Coordination Center and the Founder Surgeon of the Liver Transplantation Department at Şişli Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital, shared insights into the processes of organ donation, the challenges encountered, and proposed solutions.
Furthermore, Mert KÖK, a resident doctor at Istanbul Medeniyet University Göztepe Prof. Dr. Süleyman Yalçın City Hospital, shared his experiences and the process of becoming a bone marrow donor with the participants. In addition to the symposium, on November 17-18, 2022, organ donation stands and bone marrow donation tools were set up at our university's north and south campuses to provide information to students and encourage them to volunteer, emphasizing the importance of public health. This event was considered an important step in raising awareness about organ and bone marrow donation.
